I would like to share a quote from Robert Romano, a teacher at PS 226:
“For many of our kids belonging to the chess team, chess is the closest thing they have to any consistency or structure in their lives. When you are seven years old and have been through three foster homes, the chess team is your family. Chess is learning how to play fairly and safely. It’s learning how to win, and lose, gracefully.”
Starting in third grade, Chess-in-the-Schools teaches New York public school children in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in our city how to play chess, how to strategize, and how to succeed. Our programs help students succeed in school and life.
Chess in the Schools provides a dynamic opportunity for many of New York City’s students. More than 400,000 children have benefited from our chess programs. Our recent high school graduates all went on to college.
It is my hope you will remember our students during this season of giving and make a generous contribution to Chess in the Schools. Your support will make a huge difference for thousands of deserving children.
As a supporter this year, you will help sponsor:
• classroom chess instruction for more than 15,000 students
• after-school chess clubs for more than 5,000 children
• chess teams that will compete in local and national tournaments
• scholastic tournaments for more than 500 New York City children every weekend
• college preparation for 100 high school students
Your generosity can truly make a difference for the students such as those at PS 226 and many others who have benefited by our program.
Thank you.
