Teacher Training Institute

Thanks to the generosity of the New York City Council Chess-in-the-Schools is proud to present the Teacher Training Institute.  Click here to download the TTI Flier.

What is the Teacher Training Institute (TTI)?
The Teacher Training Institute (TTI) is a program that teaches educators in New York City how to implement a chess program at their school.

For more than twenty years, Chess-in-the-Schools has placed chess teachers in hundreds of schools to teach thousands of children to play chess. The benefits of learning chess include increased reading comprehension, better problem solving skills, and even higher scores on standardized reading tests. Now we want to share our proven curriculum with you so that even more students can learn chess and improve their academic performance.

Who is eligible for TTI?
You are, if you are a teacher in a New York City public school (elementary, middle or high school.)

If you are not a New York City public school teacher and are interested in TTI, please contact us at info@chessintheschools.org.

How does TTI work?
You can sign up for one of our TTI workshops and receive the Chess-in-the-Schools proven curriculum that will teach your students how to play chess step-by-step. During the workshops, we will train you to use this curriculum and offer support during the implementation process at your school.

Do I have to know how to play chess?

No. We can teach you the basics of chess. If you already know how to play, that is even better.

How much does TTI cost?

There is NO CHARGE to you or your school to participate in TTI. Thanks to a grant from the New York City Council, TTI is FREE to you.

How much do I have to pay for materials?
NOTHING. The City Council grant also pays for chess equipment that we will give to and your school to help you start a chess program. The free materials include chess sets, workbooks for your students, a score pad and a demonstration board. You will receive the equipment to help you start teaching chess and create a positive chess culture at your school.
